Commuting in the San Francisco Bay Area can take almost any form depending upon where you live. There are carpools, trains, ferries, rapid transit lines and buses. The following is a summary of some of the basic transit choices with links to the transit web site for schedules and additional information.

 

The Metropolitan Transportation Commission maintains a web site at http://www.transitinfo.org/ offering schedules and maps of the various transit options available in the Bay Area.

MUNI
San Francisco's Municipal Railway is the most common way to get around the City of San Francisco. MUNI operates buses, cable cars, light rail and streetcars reaching almost every neighborhood of San Francisco. Web site: www.ci.sf.ca.us/muni

BART
Bay Area Rapid Transit connects Alameda and Contra Costa Counties with San Francisco and a small portion of Northern San Mateo County. BART operates weekdays from 4 AM to after midnight, Saturdays from 6 AM and Sundays from 8 AM. BART connects to the Oakland Airport via AirBART bus service. Plans are in progress to connect BART directly to San Francisco International Airport. Web site: http://www.bart.org/

ALTAMONT COMMUTER EXPRESS
Trains will run from Stockton to San Jose with stations in Stockton, Manteca, Tracy, Livermore, Pleasanton, Fremont, Santa Clara and San Jose. There will be connections BART stations in Pleasanton, Livermore and Fremont. Web site: http://www.acerail.com/

AC TRANSIT
Alameda-Contra Costa County Transit operates buses in Fremont, Union City, Hayward, Castro Valley, Oakland, Alameda, San Lorenzo, San Leandro, Berkeley, Albany, El Cerrito, Richmond and San Pablo. Buses run daily from 4 AM to midnight. Web site: http://www.actransit.org/

COUNTY CONNECTION
Bus service in Central Contra Costa County is provided by County Connection. Buses run 5 AM to 9:30 PM weekdays and Saturdays. Connections available at several BART stations. Web site: www.transitinfo.org/cc

GOLDEN GATE TRANSIT
Serving Marin and Sonoma Counties with buses, ferries and the Golden Gate Bridge. East Bay commuters can catch a bus at the El Cerrito Del Norte BART station for a ride to Marin or Sonoma County. Golden Gate Transit operates seven days a week with weekend service to Stinson Beach. Hours of operation are 5 AM to 1 AM daily. Web site: http://www.goldengate.org/

LIVERMORE-AMADOR VALLEY TRANSIT AUTHORITY
Commonly referred to as 'Wheels' this transit system services Livermore, Pleasanton and Dublin. Web site: http://www.transitinfo.org/

RIDES
Rides for Bay Area Commuters provides free information and assistance on carpooling, vanpooling and cycling in the Bay Area. RIDES operates a free on-line service matching people interested in carpooling. Web site: http://www.rides.org/

OAKLAND INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT
Offering national and international flights as well as general aviation, the Oakland Airport has proven to be an option for travelers from throughout the Bay Area. A small airport with two main passenger terminals.

SAN FRANCISCO INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT
International and national flights to almost any location. Service is available from a large number of carriers. A new international terminal is under construction at the present time. There are a large number of satellite parking facilities in close proximity to the airport.

SAN JOSE INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT
Offering both national and international flights, San Jose is becoming the airport of choice for residents living in Southern Alameda, Santa Clara and parts to San Mateo County.

THE RED AND WHITE FLEET
Offering Bay cruises and trips around Alcatraz in San Francisco Bay. Operating seven days a week. Web site: http://www.redandwhite.com/

THE BLUE AND GOLD FLEET
Offering Bay cruises and daily trips to Alcatraz from Pier 41 at Fisherman. s Wharf. Commuter service is also available between Marin County and San Francisco and Vallejo and San Francicso. Web site: http://www.blueandgoldfleet.com/

ALAMEDA/OAKLAND FERRY
Offering commute service seven days a week to and from San Francisco. Also offers trips to Angel Island in San Francisco Bay. Operates 6 AM to 9:30 PM weekdays and 9:30 AM and 10:30 PM weekends.

HARBOR BAY FERRY
Offering ferry service from Harbor Bay Isle in Alameda to San Francisco. Web site: http://www.harborbay.com/

RICHMOND FERRY
Offering ferry service Richmond and San Francisco.
